As a former port and
home to major car manufacturing facilities, Toledo is no stranger to heavy
industry. Just outside Toledo, Oregon, Ohio located strategically on the Maumee
Bay, is the home to two major oil refineries: BP Husky and Toledo Refining
Company (PBF Energy, formerly Sunoco) and a nuclear power facility, Davis
Besse.
In 2007, BP and
Canadian company Husky Energy announced a 50-50 join venture to mine tar sands
in Husky’s Sunrise Oil Sands Project in Alberta. BP will be doing the refining
at its facility just outside of Toledo, OH. This joint venture between BP-Husky
also announced a massive $2.5 billion expansion of its refinery in Toledo to
process the crude from Alberta.
To date, BP Husky does
not have all the necessary permits to move forward with the project. In 2012,
Toledo area residents have formed a No Tar Sands Coalition to focus on the BP
Husky expansion.
