West Oakland is an area of mixed residential-industrial development where homes, schools and playgrounds are located next to industrial metal recyclers, a port, and a freeway.
Since GCM has been partnering in West Oakland to document
industrial pollution and associated human health exposures and risks and
advocate land use and other policy reform at the city and regional level.
Currently, we are working with community members to create a buffer zone between families and polluting industries by relocating metal recyclers to the abandoned Oakland Army base.
