Concerned Citizens Around Murphy, a community group formed since Hurricane Katrina and a massive
residential crude oil spill by Murphy Oil Refinery, has filed a motion for partial summary judgment against the refinery for air pollution.
The initial suit, filed in 2008, alleges the oil giant has violated the federal Clean Air Act over 130 times since October
2003 by releasing tons of sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and volatile organic compounds, in excess of permit limits.
CCAM uses the "bucket brigade" technology developed by Global Community Monitor in its efforts to gather hard data on pollution from oil refineries and other industrial pollution. This data then often forms the basis for negotiations with polluters, increased regulatory scrutiny and action, and, in some cases, litigation for illegal emissions.
