A newly released study commissioned by the state of Texas makes some striking projections as a consequence of the vast increase in oil production in the Eagle Ford Shale region. These include a 281 percent increase of airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during the peak ozone season compared to 2012 emissions and a potential 69 percent increase in nitrogen oxides — which react with VOCs in sunlight to create ground-level ozone, the main component of smog.
